Mid-Autumn Festival 2022
The 2021 Mid-Autumn Festival this year falls on 10 September. On this traditional Chinese festival, besides eating copious amounts of moon cakes, seeing the full moon with family and friends is a must.
To help ensure the best moon watching experience the Hong Kong Observatory has prepared an online set of ‘Moon watching tips’, these include the timing of moonrise, transit, moonset and full moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
According to the Observatory, the full moon will occur in the evening on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival. If weather permits, a bright round moon will be observable at night during the Mid-Autumn Festival period.
For the latest weather conditions during the Mid-Autumn Festival period, please refer to the 9-Day Weather Forecast issued by the Hong Kong Observatory for the planning of moon-watching activities.
Where best to observe the Full Moon?
There are a number of famous sites in Hong Kong where you can admire the full moon, but the West Kowloon Art Park may soon become your favourite. You can have a joyous time here with family and friends as you reunite under the full moon in our large waterfront park. The Art Park has low light pollution and expansive views making it ideal for admiring both the moon and the glamorous night skyline of Hong Kong.
You are welcome to bring rugs and snacks and eat moon cakes on the open lawn spaces as you appreciate the bright full moon. You can also walk along the Waterfront Promenade with your lanterns.
During the Mid-Autumn Festival the Art Park will stay open until 1am during the Mid-Autumn Festival (9-11 September). Guests can check the updated opening hours on the West Kowloon website. Getting to the West Kowloon Cultural District is simple as it is easily accessible by MTR, bus and car.
